A Slice of my Thoughts

This illustration reimagines a slice of grilled cheese, often considered a Western comfort food, as a site of tension rather than fulfillment. For me, as an Asian migrant mother, it is not the food I long for, but the presence of rice, flavors, and cultural familiarity left behind.
The burn marks on the bread resemble parallel bars, while the fork and knife attempt to bend them open, suggesting both boundary and release. The work reflects the quiet negotiations between adaptation and longing, comfort and estrangement, within the everyday reality of migration.
